En un nuevo intento por desbancar a Microsoft en su dominio de Internet, la empresa de informática estadounidense Apple ha puesto en circulación su navegador Safari, cuyo cometido es competir con el Internet Explorer y abrir las puertas de la Red a su esperado iPhone.

Las versiones del Safari para los sistemas operativos Windows XP y Vista fueron presentadas por el presidente ejecutivo de Apple, Steve Jobs, en la inauguración de la Conferencia Mundial de Programación de Software, que el fabricante de ordenadores Macintosh realiza anualmente en San Francisco (California). «Queremos que la porción de mercado del Safari aumente», dijo Jobs. «Hemos incorporado a Windows todas las innovaciones de Safari. Hemos logrado el navegador más innovador del mundo y el más rápido del mundo», aseguró el responsable de Apple.
El 78% de los ordenadores del mundo disponen de Internet Explorer de Microsoft, mientras que Safari, hasta ahora sólo presente en los ordenadores Macintosh, se queda con el 5% del mercado, según datos dados a conocer por Jobs, que informó de que Apple está distribuyendo Safari gratuitamente en su tienda virtual para música iTunes, junto con películas y otros contenidos para los reproductores iPod de música MP3.
Este lanzamiento es la respuesta de Apple a los programadores que presionaban a la firma para poder acceder al corazón del iPhone, con el objetivo de poder preparar programas para él.
El presidente ejecutivo de Apple mostró además el sistema operativo Leopard, que será lanzado en octubre para reemplazar el OS X Tiger, plataforma usada en dos de cada tres ordenadores Macintosh. Los recursos de Leopard mostrados por Jobs incluyen Web Clip, que permite a los usuarios crear fácilmente widgets, pequeñas ventanas en sus pantallas que se actualizarán constantemente con información de sus sitios web preferidos. Además, la Leopard?s Time Machine guarda copias de archivos y permite a los usuarios recuperar información perdida o borrada.
